SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir police arrested a 38-year-old burqa-clad woman on Thursday on suspicion that she was the woman who had thrown a petrol bomb at a CRPF camp in Sopore on Wednesday.
The woman, identified as Hasina Akhtar, approached the CRPF camp in Sopore town on foot, took out a petrol bomb from her handbag and hurled it towards the camp, setting fire to a CRPF picket, the police claimed. The fire was put out immediately by CRPF personnel.
IGP (Kashmir range) Vijay Kumar said the police was able to identify the accused as Hasina Akhtar even though she had worn a burqa. He did not explain how the identification was made.
According to IGP Kumar, Hasina Akhtar is the wife of Mohammed Yousuf Bhat, a resident of Sheeri Baramulla, and received her primary education from Darul Uloom. She did her Class X from Hanfia School, Sheeri.
In 2008-10, she came into contact with Dukhtaran-e-Millat chief Asiya Andrabi and adopted extremist ideology, the IGP said. Her husband was a stone-pelter and had been booked under the PSA in 2016 for 17 months, he said.
Hasina Akhtar was involved in posting posters of the terrorist outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba in 2019 and an FIR was registered against her under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, the IGP added. She was released on bail in December 2021, the IGP said.
She had been evading arrest after the Sopore incident but was eventually arrested, he said.
