The Indian Navy announced on Saturday that it has received its first P15B stealth guided-missile destroyer from Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders on October 28. The stealth missile destroyer has been given the name “Visakhapatnam”, as per the official release.
The release further states that the construction and delivery of the Visakhapatnam ship is another testament to the impetus given by the government and the Navy to the indigenous warship construction programmes. It is the first of its kind to be introduced in the Navy.
The Indian Navy, making the announcement on Twitter, said, “Visakhapatnam – first of the indigenous P15B stealth guided-missile destroyers being built at Mazagon Dock, Mumbai delivered to Indian Navy on October 28, 2021.” The missile destroyer ship will have the capability of launching anti-aircraft missiles from its deck.

The Navy further added, “Induction of the destroyer will not only enhance the combat readiness of Indian Navy but will also be a major leap forward towards our quest for Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India).”
The Indian defence sector is upgrading its defence systems over the past month, as new and improved equipment is being introduced across the armed forces. Recently, the Indian Army decided to deploy the upgraded vintage L-70 air defence guns, among other big defence systems, in Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh along the India-China border.
These guns were introduced in the Army earlier this month, and the officials had said, “The gun is able to take fire and engagement projected duration of time. It can now be integrated with tactical control radar and fire control radar.”
