The driver of a big rig survived a 25-foot fall from a freeway overpass in the East Bay after being hit from behind by a car that fled the scene early Thursday, the California Highway Patrol said.

The unknown driver of the vehicle collided with the big rig just after 3 a.m. on eastbound Highway 24 in Lafayette, pushing the truck off the road and onto Pleasant Hill Road below, CHP spokesperson Adam Lane confirmed.

Lane said the big rig wasn’t towing a trailer.

The portion of Pleasant Hill Road under Highway 24 remained closed Thursday morning as of 8:30 a.m. “There was a diesel fuel spill from the fuel tanks of the truck, and that’s being cleaned up,” Lane said.

The CHP is considering the incident a hit-and-run.

The San Francisco Bay Area saw multiple crashes across the region’s network of highways Thursday amid heavy rains. The National Weather Service warned motorists to drive with caution.
