HYDERABAD: At least six workers were trapped in a mine in Telangana’s Ramagundam on Monday after a huge chunk of coal fell inside it. Two of them have been rescued so far. An operation is under way to rescue the remaining four who are still trapped in the 600m-deep mine at Adriyala Longwall Project area.
Initially, a deputy manager, an operator, an overman, two workers and a deputy general manager were trapped inside the mine.
One person managed to come out and alerted the policemen. During the rescue operation, the overman and operator — who sustained minor injuries — were rescued. Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) officials said the accident took place at 2 pm. Initially, they thought that five persons were trapped inside the mine.
Later, the officials said they suspect that the deputy general manager is also trapped inside as he has been missing. The SCCL disaster management wing has been manually trying to remove the debris.
“There was a huge piece of coal between the roof and the sidewall inside the mine. The workers went inside the mine to move a machine when the coal suddenly fell on them. The deputy manager and deputy general manager were supervising the work at that time,” an SCCL employee told TOI.
