Shanghai’s 26 million people in lockdown after tests uncover Covid infections
Chinese authorities extended the lockdown of Shanghai to cover all of the financial centre’s 26 million people on Tuesday, after city-wide testing saw new Covid-19 cases surge to more than 13,000 amid growing public anger over quarantine rules. The lockdown now covers the entire city after restrictions in the city’s western districts were extended until further notice, in what has become a major test for China’s zero-tolerance strategy to eliminate the novel coronavirus.

Thane district logs six Covid-19 cases
Thane district in Maharashtra reported six fresh Covid-19 cases, taking the tally of infections to 7,08,810, an official said on Tuesday. These cases were reported on Monday, he said. With no fresh fatality due to Covid-19, the death toll in the district remained unchanged at 11,883. The mortality rate is 1.67 per cent, he added. In neighboring Palghar district, the Covid-19 case count has gone up to 1,63,592 while the death toll is 3,407, an official from Palghar said.

China mainland reports 1,173 new local Covid-19 cases
The Chinese mainland reported 1,173 new locally-transmitted Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours, the National Health Commission said Tuesday. Of the local confirmed cases reported Monday, 792 were in Jilin, 268 in Shanghai, and 17 in Heilongjiang, Xinhua News Agency reported.
