Elections for 13 Rajya Sabha seats in 6 states to be held on March 31

NEW DELHI: Elections for 13 Rajya Sabha seats (MPs), which are going to be vacant in April, will be held on March 31 with the fate of five from Punjab depending on the outcome of the state assembly polls on March 10. Among the remaining eight seats, three are from Kerala, two are from Assam and one each from Himachal Pradesh, Tripura and Nagaland.
Congress leaders A K Antony from Kerala and Anand Sharma from Himachal Pradesh, and SAD leaders Naresh Gujral and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa are among those who will retire in April.
The last date of nominations for polls to the 13 seats is March 21. The biennial polls for these 13 seats is going to be the first in a series of several others this year with as many as 75 seats from different states falling vacant in the Upper House, besides seven nominated ones.
A total of 73 out of 75 Rajya Sabha seats, which are going to be vacant this year will have to be filled before the President’s election as most of these members are going to retire in April, June and early July after completing their tenures. The prominent one who are going to retire in July include P Chidambaram (Congress) from Maharashtra, Piyush Goyal (BJP) from Maharashtra, Ambika Soni (Congress) from Punjab, Kapil Sibal (Congress) from Uttar Pradesh, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi (BJP) from Jharkhand, Praful Patel (NCP) from Maharashtra, Sanjay Raut (Shiv Sena) from Maharashtra and Satish Chandra Mishra (BSP) from UP.
The seven nominated members of the Upper House who are going to retire include Subramanian Swamy, Mary Kom, Swapan Dasgupta, Roopa Ganguly, Suresh Gopi and Narendra Jadhav in April, and Sambhaji Chhatrapati in May. Though nominated members can’t cast their votes in the Presidential election, final position will depend on whether the nominated ones will remain neutral or join any party after being nominated like the nine existing ones who are now part of the BJP.
