NEW DELHI: BJP functionaries on Wednesday criticised the Punjab government for the security lapse during PM Modi‘s visit and countered Congress‘s claims that farmers “suddenly” came onto the road, asking how the agitators knew of the PM’s route that was being coordinated by the state police.
They said the Congress government played all possible tricks to scuttle the PM’s poll programme and pointed to jeering tweets by Youth Congress leader B Srinivas such as “How’s the josh, Modi ji” to claim the incident was scripted by the party.
While scuttling the PM’s programmes, Congress did not bother that he was to pay tributes to martyrs and lay the foundation stone for key development works, BJP President J P Nadda said. “To make matters worse, CM Channi refused to get on the phone to address the matter,” he said.
Slamming the Punjab CM and home minister, former CM and BJP ally Amarinder Singh said, “Complete failure of law and order… When you cannot provide smooth passage to the Prime Minister of the country and that too just 10 km from the Pakistan border, you have no right to stay in office and should quit!”
“A deliberate compromise with the PM’s security due to political differences is a reflection of the undemocratic thinking and mentality of Congress,” defence minister Rajnath Singh said.
Later at a press conference, Union minister Smriti Irani and BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said elements acting at the behest of the Congress tried to physically harm the PM.
Referring to Srinivas’s tweet, Irani said, “When PM Modi had his security breached, Congress leaders erupted with joy, asking him how his ‘josh’ was. PM Modi, magnanimous as ever, on his way back, communicated, ‘Zinda laut raha hoon!'”
