NEW DELHI: India has launched talks with countries such as Egypt that depend on Russian and Ukrainian wheat so that it can fill the gap created and at least double exports.
While demand for Indian wheat has increased in the last few weeks, commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal has also begun a dialogue with some prospective importers. On Tuesday, he took the issue with Egypt’s planning and economic development minister Hala El-Said in Dubai.
The government has identified at least nine new markets for Indian produce. Egypt is seen to be the biggest potential market that can open for Indian wheat exporters. It had imported 13 million tonnes and the government is looking to begin with supplying at least 2 million tonnes initially. Nigeria, Thailand, Vietnam and Turkey are among the other nine new markets that the Centre is seeking to tap. Russia and Ukraine are estimated to have supplied around 15 million tonnes to the nine markets.
In addition, it is eyeing increasing its share in Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Korea and West Asia. Russia and Ukraine are estimated to have supplied over 12 million tonnes to these countries, while India’s share was 6 million tonnes. The government is seeking to double this.
