Queen Elizabeth II will not attend the Remembrance Sunday service in London to remember Britain’s war dead after spraining her back, Buckingham Palace said Sunday.
The 95-year-old monarch has been under doctors’ orders to rest for almost a month after spending a night in hospital in October.
Her attendance at the service in London on Sunday was expected to be her first public appearance after canceling events in recent weeks, but Buckingham Palace said there was a last-minute change of plans after the injury.
In a statement, palace officials said a wreath would be laid on her behalf by her son, Prince Charles.
“The Queen, having sprained her back, has decided this morning with great regret that she will not be able to attend today’s Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph,” the statement said. “Her Majesty is disappointed that she will miss the service. As in previous years, a wreath will be laid on Her Majesty’s behalf by The Prince of Wales.”
The queen spent a night in a London hospital last month after being admitted for medical tests. Buckingham Palace later said she had been told by doctors to rest for at least two weeks.
