A 12-mile stretch of California’s Highway 1, the famously scenic route that snakes along the state coastline, was closed Wednesday morning after a rockslide covered the roadway in boulders and debris.

The highway was shut down to traffic in both directions from Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County to Fullers Point in Monterey County, near Gorda, Caltrans said. Travel between Carmel and Gorda remained open.

Caltrans estimates the highway will be closed for a week based on early investigation. The agency is clearing the roadway and assessing the embankment above the area.

Motorists heading north can use Highway 46 West and Highway 101 as detours, and those traveling south can use Highway 68 and Highway 101, Caltrans said.

STATE ROUTE 70 UPDATE: SR 70 remains closed between the Jarbo Gap and the Greenville Wye (Butte/Plumas County) with no current estimated time of reopening. Crews are continuing to assess damage to the route following Sunday’s storm.

The rockslide occurred after an atmospheric river swept California Sunday into Monday, dumping copious amounts of snow and rain across the state. The storm temporarily closed roadways with flooding and mudslides.

In far Northern California, mudslides have closed Highway 70 between Jarbo Gap and Greenville Wye near the Butte-Plumas county line. Caltrans said multiple slides occurred and the largest dumped approximately 5,000 cubic yards of large material onto the roadway.
