DHARWAD: The Nuggikeri Anjaneya Temple management committee has decided that no vendor, Hindu or Muslim, will be allowed to do business around the temple premises spread on 2.3 acres of land near Dharwad.
The decision comes close on the heels of Muslim vendors‘ fruit stalls being vandalised last week allegedly by Sri Ram Sene activists. On Friday, the temple committee called all traders who had been carrying out small businesses like selling puja materials, fruits etc on the temple premises till now, and asked them to move out.
Nuggikeri temple trustee member Narasimha Desai said, “The Trust has decided not to allow traders of any community to do business on the temple premises as we do not want any kind of trouble in this holy place. The Trust will take a decision later about setting up a shop of its own. As of now we have told all the shopkeepers who have stalls on the temple premises to vacate at the earliest.”
Henceforth, no one will be allowed to do business on the temple premises, he added. The temple committee said it would convey its decision to the deputy commissioner and the superintendent of police through a letter. On April 9, Sene activists, who had cautioned the temple management committee against allowing non-Hindus to carry out business in the temple premises, had vandalised the stalls run by Muslims and destroyed fruits and flowers.
Videos of the incident had gone viral drawing widespread criticism. Based on a complaint by a vendor, Dharwad Rural police registered an FIR against eight people for hurting religious sentiments and attempts to breach peace. On Saturday, the fourth JMFC court in Dharwad granted conditional bail to four Sene activists. The court granted them conditional bail on a surety of two persons and a bond of Rs 25,000. The court also directed the activists to sign the roll call at the rural police station on Mondays and Thursdays.
