Malaysia recorded 8,084 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 in the 24 hours as of midnight Thursday, bringing the total tally to 23,69,613, according to the health ministry. Of the new cases, 21 were imported and 8,063 were locally transmitted, data released on the ministry’s website showed. Another 88 deaths were reported from the pandemic, bringing the coronavirus-related death toll to 27,681.

India conducts over 11 lakh Covid-19 tests in last 24 hours
In an effort to curb the Covid-19 pandemic, over 11 lakh samples were tested in the last 24 hours with which the total tests conducted so far crossed 58.88 crores, informed Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Friday. A total of 11,80,148 samples were tested on Thursday to detect the presence of the virus in the population. So far, 58,88,44,673 tests have been conducted across the country since the onset of the pandemic last year. Meanwhile, India on Thursday reported 18,987 new Covid-19 cases, 19,808 recoveries and 246 deaths.

Andaman and Nicobar Islands reported three new Covid-19 cases, which took the tally in the Union Territory to 7,640, a health department official said on Friday.

New Delhi backs WHO on finding Covid’s origins
India on Thursday again pitched for finding the origins of Covid-19, a day after the World Health Organisation set up a group of experts to carry forward studies on the contentious issue over a year-and-a-half after the virus was first detected in Wuhan, China. India’s Raman Gangakhedkar, a renowned epidemiologist and Dr C G Pandit National Chair at the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), is among 26 members of the Scientific Advisory Group for determining the origins of the virus, according to the WHO. “Let me just reiterate what we have stated till now. We have our interest in further studies and data on this issue of the origin and the need for understanding and cooperation by all concerned,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said at a media briefing.
Indonesia reopens for international visitors from 19 countries
Indonesia has allowed international visitors from 19 countries, including India, with a Covid-19 positivity rate of less than 5 per cent to enter the country, Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said.

Thane district’s infection tally rises by 266, death toll by four
With the addition of 266 coronavirus positive cases, the infection count in Thane district of Maharashtra mounted to 5,62,842, an official said on Friday. These new cases were reported on Thursday, he said. As the virus claimed the lives of four persons, the death toll in the district rose to 11,455. Thane’s Covid-19 mortality rate is 2.03 per cent, he added. In neighbouring Palghar district, the caseload went up to 1,37,369 and death toll to 3,279, another official said.
