Obviously some people are just idiots regardless of their background/education, but I’m assuming it’s partially the idea that some of those people got into it not because the believed the science side, but because it was either one of their few opportunities or because of the money in certain fields.
To offer a kind of parallel example, I joined the military at 18, yet I’ve been a pacifist my entire life, I’m anti-war, and I support military reductions; I didn’t sign up because I believed in the career, I signed up because it was one of the few options available to me at the time – and no amount of training I went through could convince me my beliefs were wrong.
