Police officers interrupted a catalytic converter theft near Geneve Avenue and Howth Street in San Francisco’s Ingleside neighborhood, early Monday.
Google MapsSan Francisco police arrested three suspects Monday after spotting a catalytic converter theft in action on an early morning patrol in Ingleside, officials said. But before any arrests were made, the alleged thieves led police on a car chase.
At 2:41 a.m., officers noticed several people standing around a vehicle double-parked next to another car that was lifted on a floor jack near the intersection of Geneva Avenue and Howth Street, the San Francisco Police Department said in a statement on Tuesday.
When the group saw the police car, they jumped into the double-parked car and sped off, the department said.
Believing they may have interrupted a theft in progress, officers drove after the suspect vehicle, police said. When the car pulled into a dead-end street, the driver placed the vehicle in reverse and ran into the police car, then attempted to drive forward, smashing into a trash dumpster, according to police.
The driver of the suspect vehicle and one of the occupants hopped out of the car and ran to a nearby construction site, “leaving their vehicle to roll away and become involved in another vehicle collision with surrounding objects,” the department said. The officers detained two other suspects who were in the car car before they fled.

More police officers were called onto the scene to search for the two suspects at the construction site. They were able to locate and detain one, police said.
Multiple witnesses and neighbors provided statements and one neighbor provided security footage of the fourth suspect scaling a backyard fence and fleeing the scene. Officers located a discarded firearm in the backyard.
In a search of the suspect vehicle, officers said they found a BB gun, burglary tools, a loaded and illegal extended gun magazine, a handgun, ammunition and narcotics. One of the detained suspects was in possession of narcotics, the department said.
The three detained suspects were arrested on multiple charges, including conspiracy, aggravated assault, weapons and narcotics offenses and attempted grand theft.
