A California football star was killed in a car crash last week after a vehicle careened off the road and crashed into a tree.

Carlton Keegan, an all-star football player for Scotts Valley High School, was killed in a car crash on the afternoon of March 30 near the intersection of Granite Creek Road and Branciforte Drive — close to the Mystery Spot

Keegan, 18, was in the passenger seat of a vehicle with 18-year-old Owen Zeip driving at around 3:30 p.m. that day, KRON reported. A CHP spokesperson told the news station that “Zeip allowed his vehicle to veer off the roadway and down a dirt embankment” where the 2006 Subaru Outback crashed into a tree. Why the vehicle left the road remains unclear.

Keegan was taken to a nearby hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. Zeip sustained minor injuries, reported KRON.

“Our hearts are broken for the Keegan Family,” wrote the Scotts Valley High School Falcon Club in a Facebook post April 2. “Carlton’s joy, kindness and encouraging spirit will never be forgotten.”

His coach, Louie Walters, in a separate Facebook tribute recalled Keegan having a positive attitude during training, “always [with a] big smile and thumbs up.”

“He will always be my guy,” Walters added.

Last July, the Mercury News reported, a motorcyclist was killed in the same area.
