Television icon Betty White, who starred in the hit show “Golden Girls,” died Friday, just weeks shy of her 100th birthday.

White, a beloved actress who was hailed as a “national treasure” thanks to her sweet demeanor and edgy sense of humor, had become a social media phenom in her later years. 

White was due to turn 100 on Jan. 17. 

TMZ first broke the news of White’s death, reporting that she had been found deceased at her home at 9:30 a.m.

On Dec. 28, White sent her final tweet, saying, “My 100th birthday … I cannot believe it is coming up, and People Magazine is celebrating with me! The new issue of 

@people is available on newsstands nationwide tomorrow.”

White, a comedian, was most well-known for her lead role as Rose Nylund in “The Golden Girls,” which ran from 1985 to 1992, though she started her career in radio in the 1940s.
