Yup. Everyone falling all over themselves to hold onto Smith’s side in this, because his wife… checks notes… has hair loss?!

Half of all men and 25% of women experience pattern hair loss, which results in large swaths of hair falling out. However, the type of baldness that Jada supposedly has – alopecia areata – results in patchy spots of baldness that actually tend to resolve themselves:

In most cases that begin with a small number of patches of hair loss, hair grows back after a few months to a year.

If you look at the videos she’s made highlighting her supposed “struggle”, you can see that she has a small line of missing hair. Something that could easily be covered up with all the access she has to stylists and hairdressers. The choice to completely shave her head was her own. She still has lots of hair. She made a style choice, and has the means to have any hairstyle she wants.

People trying to make this into some valiant struggle on her part are part of the problem. It detracts from the very real struggle some men and women face with drastic hair loss. They’re the ones who suffer from unrealistic beauty and masculinity standards without the money and care to address them. Nothing Chris Rock said was even remotely punching down or out of the bounds of propriety. She’s not on chemo meds.
