I hope they are paid well

I can’t even come close BUT!! When I turned 18 I randomly applied for a cruise line and made federal minimum wage. That was like I don’t know 6 and change back then? But you earn overtime after your second or third shift. So anyways even on a small cruise line I was making enough money for a dirt bike and then I quit cause fuck that job. It sucks. I wrote too much

It doesn’t matter how hard you work, your salary only reflect how irreplaceable you are.

The pay is pretty good for the most part. Officers make 90 – 180+ depending on the industry/company/rank.

The United States Merchant Marine Academy is a hidden gem.

They are paid in $$ which when converted to their local currency is a lot of money. There is a reason you see only 3rd world country people apply for such jobs.

Lol as long as you’re smiling for the video… that’s all corporate needs.

Guys from India and the Philippines? Not unless they’re an officer. Even then they’re not paid nearly enough. As a lowly AB from the US I didn’t make nearly enough to stay on ships. You can make just as much working a 9-5 and get to go home every night. Everyone I worked with was difficult and hated everyone else. Now imagine being stuck on a boat with them 24 hours a day.

I work in the industry. Non-western sailors are paid and treated very poorly.

Live on the west coast? Look into the Pacific Coast Coalition for Seafarers, or the Sea Farers Mission, great way to volunteer and support sea farers who face harsh, dangerous conditions and criminally low pay

level 2

It really sucks that charities have to support these people because their employers won’t.

Top post is about how well they are paid, second is this. How TF are people supposed to know what to believe anymore.

I’m not sure where you’re getting the criminally low pay from. It pays pretty well because it’s a dangerous and undesirable job, but has certain type of romanticism to it as well. You get to travel and see the world in ways you probably never would otherwise. My father was a merchant marine and boy were there stories. One of them involved finding my mom in Japan and bringing her back to the states ¯_(ツ)_/¯

criminally low pay

Makes me wonder if there’ll ever be a shipping version of the Truckconvoy.

My family lives on the coast in a huge logging town and men used to jump off the boats and start new lives
