A handful of installations in the U.S. are still housing more than 53,000 Afghan evacuees, Stars and Stripes reported, noting that about 6,700 have been resettled across the country.

DOD provides food, housing, medical assistance and recreational opportunities for the Afghans. The federal government will reimburse those costs but hasn’t yet, Pentagon spokesperson John Kirby told reporters Monday.

“Clearly there are assets — resources, time — that are being devoted to this that are in some cases not being diverted to other things,” Kirby said, adding readiness isn’t being impacted.

The stateside bases hosting evacuees are Fort Bliss, Texas, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, New Jersey, Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, Camp Atterbury, Indiana, Holloman Air Force Base, New Mexico, and three Virginia bases – Fort Lee, Fort Pickett and Marine Corps Base Quantico.
