Also something to consider: If you’re a person deemed plain and you don’t have some magical, outstanding talent like out of a Hollywood story… you’re just never seen. Never.
Susan Boyle’s situation is rare and extreme. I think a lot of people, especially as kids, who are otherwise plain spend their whole lives hoping for some secret ability that will force the world to see them. And it never happens, because it’s a fairytale. So those people spend their lives feeling unseen and unacknowledged. Because no one really gives much of a fuck about plain people.
And as shit as it is for plain people, for ugly people it’s an entirely worse experience because they are seen and actively mocked, bullied, and gatekept out of various opportunities. That’s a whole other level of hell that even a super special skill or talent can’t save them from.
I dunno. It sucks. We put too much value on appearance.
