The unidentified man was shot at about 12:20 p.m. on the 300 block of 14th Street in downtown Oakland, the East Bay Times reported. According to KPIX, the guard was “with a news crew at the time.” The man was taken to Highland Hospital; his condition is now stable.
“One of our dearest security guards was shot while protecting a TV news crew from another station today,” KPIX reporter Maria Cid Medina wrote on Twitter. “Our hearts are with him.”
Former Bay Area TV personality Stanley Roberts also tweeted about the incident, saying the altercation occurred during “a news crew robbery.”

The East Bay Times reported the news crew was filming a follow-up to the burglary that took place Monday night at the nearby Prime 356 store. The Times reported the man is a former San Jose police officer who now works private security.
The Oakland Police Department is asking businesses or residents in the area to check surveillance footage to see if their cameras captured the incident. Anyone with information regarding the incident is encouraged to call 510-238-3426.
