President Joe Biden on Thursday wished Americans a happy and closer-to-normal Thanksgiving, the second celebrated in the shadow of the coronavirus pandemic, in remarks welcoming the resumption of holiday traditions in many homes. “As we give thanks for what we have, we also keep in our hearts those who have been lost and those who have lost so much,” the president said in a video greeting recorded with first lady Jill Biden at the White House before their trip to Nantucket, Massachusetts, for the holiday weekend.

Biden picks women of color to lead White House budget office
Two women of color are President Joe Biden’s picks to lead the White House budget office, a milestone for the powerful agency after his first choice withdrew following criticism over her previous attacks on lawmakers from both parties. If confirmed by the Senate, Shalanda Young would become the first Black woman in charge of the Office of Management and Budget, while Nani Coloretti, a Filipino American, would serve as Young’s deputy, making Coloretti one of the highest-ranking Asian Americans in government. “Today it’s my honor to nominate two extraordinary, history-making women to lead the Office of Management and Budget,” Biden said in a video announcement released Wednesday while he spends the Thanksgiving holiday on Nantucket island in Massachusetts.

Bidens resume Thanksgiving tradition in Nantucket
President Joe Biden, first lady Jill Biden and other members of the Biden family woke up in Nantucket, Massachusetts, on Wednesday, resuming a Thanksgiving tradition that dates back to 1975. The Biden family skipped Thanksgiving in Nantucket in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the family has spent Thanksgiving on the small island since the president was a senator and then vice president. This year, the Bidens will stay at the home of longtime friend and billionaire David Rubenstein, co-founder of the Carlyle Group, whose property is on Abrams Point in Nantucket Harbor, according to the White House.
