Google Street ViewThe Tuolumne County District Attorney’s Office filed murder charges Monday against a retired East Bay police officer in connection with the death of a 27-year-old Modesto woman in a head-on crash on State Route 49 in the California Sierra foothills.
Theodore Young, 63, a former with the Pleasanton Police Department who lives in Sonora, was charged with the murder of Rebekah Gall, District Attorney Cassandra Jenecke wrote in an email to SFGATE. Young was also charged with gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, driving under the influence causing brain injury with a prior DUI conviction and driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher causing brain injury with a prior conviction.
On Jan. 18 at approximately 5:15 p.m., Young was driving a 2016 Toyota pickup on the highway south of Chicken Ranch Road in Jamestown at about 50 mph when he allowed his vehicle to travel to the left, over the double yellow lines, directly in front of Gall’s Acura sedan in the southbound lane, the California Highway Patrol said in a statement.
Gall was flown from the crash scene by air ambulance to Doctor’s Medical Center in Modesto, CHP said. She later died from her injuries. Young was arrested and booked in the Tuolumne County Jail on a felony DUI charge at that time, but he posted bail and was released. CHP officers took Young back into custody after they sought and received a Ramey warrant from the DA’s office. The warrant allowed officers to take Young into custody ahead of formal murder charges being filed.
Young’s arraignment is scheduled for Tuesday at 4 p.m. He’s being held at Dambacher Detention Center with his bail set at $1 million, Jenecke said.
